1. What is a managed care organization (MCO)?

In Ohio, a Managed Care Organization (MCO) is a state-certified entity that partners with the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) to manage medical aspects of workers’ compensation claims. MCOs coordinate medical treatment, facilitate return-to-work programs, and ensure that injured workers receive appropriate care while helping employers control costs.

2. What is the Ohio BWC MCO open enrollment period?

The Ohio BWC MCO open enrollment period is a designated timeframe, occurring every two years, during which state-fund employers can select or change their MCO. Outside of this period, employers generally cannot switch MCOs unless under special circumstances.

4. What does a Managed Care Organization (MCO) do for Ohio employers?

MCOs handle the medical management of workers’ compensation claims.
